There was something about Cali that always puzzled me.
Cali had been a stray, and of course, she didn't know me particularly well.
I had only been feeding her for a short time, and while she was becoming more comfortable around me, Cali was still very much an outdoor cat trying to figure out whether this human was worth trusting.
Then winter arrived.
Eventually, she started coming inside at night. It was growing colder, and I'm a softie. So, every evening followed almost the same routine.
She'd eat a little dinner.
Walk over to me.
Climb into my lap.
And almost instantly...
Fall asleep.
Not the light, one-eye-open nap that cats are famous for.
I mean a deep sleep.
The kind where every muscle relaxes.
The kind where she looked completely at peace...where defense shields are lowered.
I always found that remarkable. After all, there was other cats present, so it left me wondering, "How can she trust me this much already?"
It didn't seem to add up.
Then one day, months later, I remembered something I'd almost forgotten.
A Moment That Changed Everything
It happened early in our relationship.
I was outside putting food in Cali's bowl when the neighbor's German Shepherd came charging toward us.
This wasn't just an energetic dog saying hello.
The dog had a reputation.
People in the neighborhood knew he could be aggressive toward both people, kids and animals.
Cali froze.
She didn't run.
She didn't climb.
She simply stopped.
Instinct, perhaps.
Or fear.
I don't know.
What I do know is that I stood between them.
I held my ground and firmly told the dog to "Go."
Again.
And again.
Eventually...he did.
The whole encounter lasted less than a minute.
I finished feeding Cali, thought very little about it, and went on with my day.
Or so I thought.
Apparently...
I may have forgotten, yes. But Cali remembered.
Much later, as I watched this once-stray cat sleeping soundly in my lap, that memory suddenly resurfaced.
And everything made sense.
From my perspective...It was one brief encounter. Potentially dangerous, yes...but quickly averted.
From Cali's perspective...well, it may have been the moment she decided I was safe.
The moment she realized this strange human wasn't just the source of food. No. Rather, someone who would stand between her and danger. And that, to Cali, was someone worth trusting.
Trust Isn't Built Overnight
People often talk about earning a pet's trust.
Usually we think about food and treats.
Patience.
Gentle voices.
Slow movements.
Those things absolutely matter.
But trust is also built through consistency.
Protection.
Showing up.
Being predictable.
Pets notice far more than we sometimes realize.
They're constantly observing us.
Learning from us.
Deciding whether we're safe.
Sometimes they're making those decisions long before we realize they are.
Looking Back...
When I think about Cali sleeping so peacefully on my lap now, I don't see a stray cat taking a nap.
I see an animal who quietly made a decision.
One I didn't even know she'd made.
It turns out trust wasn't built the night she came inside. It had started weeks earlier. Standing beside a food bowl. With a German Shepherd. And one simple word.
"Go."
Looking back...
I think that may have been the day Cali decided she was finally home.
