When you start feeding a stray cat, you expect a few surprises.
Usually, you can expect some cautious glances. You expect slow progress.
And yes, with a neighborhood cat accustomed to going door-to-door, you can even expect the occasional disappearing act.
What you don't expect?
Well, we'll come to that.
The Beginning of Cali
In the fall of 2023, a little stray cat started visiting my house. She was lively. She was an explorer. She was a free spirit, which earned her the name "Lil Cali" because she was truly a California girl.
She would show up around mealtime, enjoy a good dinner, and then linger just long enough to make me wonder if she was considering adopting me.
My plan was simple.
Feed her.
Earn her trust.
And then find her a wonderful forever home.
Simple enough.
Except...one thing: Cali apparently had a different plan.
She became increasingly interested in the inside of my house.
Whenever the door opened, she'd make a surprisingly convincing argument for why she should be on the other side of it.
Sometimes...well, usually, she won.
A Garage Becomes a Hotel
As November arrived and the temperatures dropped, I started worrying about her sleeping outside.
So I made a compromise.
I'd leave the garage door cracked open just enough for her to slip inside at night.
To help with comfort, I built what I considered a pretty respectable little setup.
A sturdy box.
A warm blanket.
Food.
Fresh water.
In my mind, I'd created the feline equivalent of a cozy bed-and-breakfast.
Mission accomplished.
Or so I thought.
The 3:00 A.M. Inspection
One night, around three o'clock in the morning, I quietly walked into the garage to check on my little guest.
Sure enough, there was a furry little body curled up in the blanket.
Mission accomplished.
I smiled...
...for about two seconds.
Because that wasn't Cali.
Staring up at me...was a possum.
Curled up comfortably. Looking for all the world like he'd booked a reservation weeks in advance.
The Real Guest of Honor
I glanced upward.
There was Cali.
Perched safely on a shelf.
Staring down at the scene with an expression I can only describe as complete disbelief.
I swear she was thinking,
"Seriously? You invited HIM?"
She looked offended. A tad confused. And maybe even a little betrayed.
Meanwhile, the possum appeared perfectly content with the accommodations.
Apparently, my garage hotel had received excellent reviews in the local wildlife community.
Sometimes Plans Change
I wasn't angry. Far from it. The possum was adorable, something of a baby himself and simply looking for warmth on a cold night.
He wasn't causing trouble.
Not at all.
He had simply discovered premium lodging before the intended guest had fully committed.
After the possum scurried under my car, I looked back at Cali.
She wasn't coming down.
And honestly...
I couldn't blame her.
So that night...
Cali slept inside.
Then she slept inside the next night.
And the night after that.
Somewhere along the way, my temporary arrangement quietly became permanent.
Funny How Things Work Out
It's funny how often life with pets unfolds differently than we imagine.
I thought I was building a garage shelter for a stray cat.
Instead...
I accidentally opened the area's nicest possum motel.
And in doing so...
I unknowingly gave Cali exactly what she'd been trying to tell me all along.
She didn't want the garage.
She wanted a home.
Thankfully...
Eventually, I figured it out.
